How Quad9 and LWLcom Are Improving Resilience for Germany’s Internet Community
Quad9 and LWLcom are pleased to announce their strategic partnership to strengthen internet resilience, performance, and security for users across Germany. LWLcom is a German-based telecommunications provider specializing in high-performance IP transit, data connectivity, and advanced networking services across key metropolitan regions. Initiated through discussions in late 2024 and fully deployed throughout 2025, this collaboration reflects a shared commitment to support critical internet infrastructure and prioritize the needs of end users. As Quad9 serves millions of users in Germany, addressing infrastructure limitations—particularly the historical reliance on Frankfurt as a single routing point—became an urgent priority.
To address this, Quad9 sought to strengthen its network through expanded connectivity and geographic reach, and LWLcom emerged as a natural partner, offering both the infrastructure and commitment needed to support this effort. “LWLcom’s IP transit and peering connectivity in these German metros is among the best in the country. Very few networks in Germany have the kind of deep ASN adjacency in so many critical metros” said Babak Farrokhi, Quad9 Director of Operations. More importantly, LWLcom demonstrated a strong alignment with Quad9’s mission, stepping forward more than a year ago with enthusiasm and a clear understanding that services like Quad9 represent essential infrastructure for the broader .DE community.
Through LWLcom’s excellent support and partnership, Quad9 has expanded its presence beyond Frankfurt, with new routing locations established in Berlin, Hamburg, Düsseldorf, and Munich. This expansion ensures that German users can connect to Quad9 services through geographically closer nodes, significantly improving latency and overall performance. At the same time, the additional anycast distribution of many more cities adds critical redundancy and resilience to Quad9’s network footprint in Germany and the wider region.
For LWLcom, the partnership fits how the company already runs its network: regional reach, traffic kept on short paths. LWLcom did more than host Quad9’s hardware. It also worked through the routing changes with Quad9 that makes the expansion actually pay off.
“Quad9 came to us with a clear problem: a service the whole .DE community relies on still hung off a single location in Frankfurt. We were glad to take it on early, because resilience is worth building before you need it. A resolver like this should sit close to the people using it. For us the point is simple, our users notice the difference. Our own access customers, and the networks that rely on us for transit, now reach Quad9 on a short local path instead of detouring through Frankfurt. We also extended our BGP communities together with Quad9, so every LWLcom customer gets more say over how their traffic is routed. This is the sort of infrastructure that should just quietly do its job, and across most of our region it now does,” said Simon Frerichs, CTO at LWLcom.
Today, a large portion of Quad9 users in Germany are directly benefiting from these enhancements by shifting their traffic to these higher capacity and lower latency locations. This includes not only individual users, but also universities, government institutions, nonprofits, and small-to-medium-sized businesses that rely on secure and reliable DNS services. The partnership underscores how collaboration between mission-driven organizations and well-connected network providers can deliver tangible improvements to internet infrastructure, ultimately strengthening the experience and security of the end users it serves.
